How to Take Kratom
Common methods people use to consume kratom, including powder, capsules, tea, and more.
People who use kratom consume it in a variety of ways. This hub explores the most commonly discussed methods — from powder and capsules to tea and other preparations. Methods and preferences vary widely from person to person.
The formats you will encounter
Most Canadian listings fall into four groups. Powder is simply dried leaf milled fine. Crushed leaf is the same material left coarse, usually intended for brewing. Capsules are powder pre-measured into gelatin or cellulose shells, which buys convenience at a significant price premium per gram. Extracts are concentrated preparations where alkaloids have been drawn out and reduced down.
Extracts deserve separating from the other three. A concentrated extract is not simply a stronger version of leaf powder — the ratio between alkaloids can shift during processing, so the result is a materially different product. Treating an extract as interchangeable with plain leaf, gram for gram, is the most consequential mistake in this category.
Why the format matters less than the variability
Discussion of consumption methods tends to focus on taste and convenience, which are real considerations but minor ones. The larger issue is the one covered in the basics hub: alkaloid content is not standardised, and no Canadian vendor is required to disclose it. A gram of one product is not equivalent to a gram of another.
This is precisely why we place more weight on whether a vendor publishes third-party lab results than on anything to do with preparation technique. A published certificate of analysis tells you something about what is actually in the bag. A preparation tip does not.
Storage and handling
Dried plant material degrades on exposure to light, heat, oxygen and humidity — this is ordinary botanical behaviour and is not specific to kratom. Cool, dark, dry and airtight is the sensible default, the same as for culinary herbs and loose-leaf tea.
Claims about particular storage methods preserving or enhancing potency go beyond what is established. Sensible storage slows the deterioration of plant material generally; it does not confer properties the product did not already have.
What you will not find here
We do not publish dosing guidance. Health Canada has not authorised kratom for consumption, no safe intake has been established for it, and the batch-to-batch variability described above would undermine any general figure even if one existed.
We would extend that as a reading strategy rather than just a disclaimer: treat confident, specific dosing advice — particularly from anyone selling the product — as a signal about the source rather than as useful information. If you are considering kratom and take medication or have a health condition, that is a conversation for a healthcare professional who knows your history.
